Foundational Studies

Civilizational Archive

A structured digital archive of Sufi intellectual history — organized by master, lineage, region, era, and theme. Five entry points, one unified archive engine.

Archive Scope

Foundational Studies documents the lives, lineages, and intellectual contributions of Sufi masters across fourteen centuries of Islamic civilization. The archive spans the Arabian Peninsula, Persia, Central Asia, South Asia, Anatolia, North Africa, Al-Andalus, and beyond.

Every entry is classified across four orthogonal dimensions — lineage, region, era, and theme — enabling precise cross-referential navigation. The archive is designed for scholars, researchers, and serious students of Islamic intellectual history.

Classification Dimensions

Four orthogonal axes used to organize every master in the archive

Lineage

Silsila

The unbroken chain of transmission from master to disciple. Each order traces its spiritual genealogy to the Prophet through specific chains that define its method, emphasis, and authority.

Region

Mintaqa

The civilizational geography of Sufism — from the Arabian Peninsula and Persia to Central Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, Anatolia, North Africa, and Al-Andalus. Geography shaped practice, language, and cultural expression.

Era

Asr

Seven historical periods from the Prophetic transmission through the age of reform and modernity. Each era represents a distinct phase in the intellectual and institutional development of Islamic mysticism.

Theme

Mawdhu

Thirty-one scholarly themes organized into six clusters — metaphysical, psychological, devotional, transmission, intellectual, and civilizational. Themes reveal the doctrinal and practical concerns of each master.
