The interdisciplinary study of development — economic, social, and political — in the Global South, with attention to poverty, inequality, and structural transformation.

Development studies must confront its own history as a discipline implicated in neo-colonial interventions. Questions of measurement, whose conception of development is operative, and the ethics of conditionality are foundational, not peripheral.

The Sufi tradition's concept of karama (dignity) as intrinsic to the human being — not contingent on economic status or productivity — challenges the metrics of development. The tradition's emphasis on self-sufficiency (isti'na) and community mutual aid (ta'awun) models development grounded in relational capacity rather than external transfer.
